Abstract
So Much So: a suite for chamber ensembles is a set of variations on an original melodic theme that focuses on color and textures within fluctuating sizes of instrumental ensembles. It consists of 22 short movements organized in seven larger parts that comprise a continuous piece of music. The melodic theme and overall harmonies are expanded upon in each instrumental combination and are reinforced by tutti sections of the sinfonietta ensemble. The piece employs spatial modulation, giving each movement a unique configuration within the concert area and composition. Community, and competition within, are the underlying extramusical factors as conveyed through the presence and placement of soloists, as well as the extent to which the performers musically demand attention from fellow musicians and the audience.
