Abstract
The Clinic is a social satire that examines modern masculinity, online cults of personality, and the social conditions that lead men to join hate groups. It is told through two perspectives: the nameless protagonist, a privately educated, neoliberal white man, and Eric Damien, the charismatic leader that runs the Clinic, a male rehabilitation commune. The narrator’s perspective is told through the first-person present to create a sense of immediacy and intimacy, while Damien’s perspective is delivered through artifacts such as podcast transcripts, magazine profiles, and testimonials from his website to simulate the narrator’s media consumption habits. The goal of the piece is to call attention to the pervasive and shapeshifting nature of misogyny and racism in modern society and their connection to capitalism by focusing on two protagonists that claim to be progressive.
