Abstract
A systematic and safe approach to the surgical treatment of symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis consists of accurate preoperative diagnosis, planning and patient preparation, as well as precise surgical technique. Positioning of the patient, familiarity with the pathologic anatomy, excellent hemostasis, and a planned sequence of decompression are all important in the actual surgical technique. Early postoperative mobilization and rehabilitation of the patient are also essential for a high percentage of satisfactory outcomes of surgery.
