Abstract
Joseph P. De Santis, PhD, ARNP, ACRN, reviews the high prevalence of depression among persons with HIV infection and outlines the significant implications of these comorbidities for case managers. Among the most important tasks for a case manager is to screen patients for depression at every health care encounter and refer vulnerable patients to a mental health professional for more in-depth assessment. DepressionDLwhich can be caused by HIV-related stigma, co-occurring mental health conditions, substance use/abuse, acute stress, and drugs used to treat HIV-has a negative effect on treatment adherence and can lead to increased risky sexual behaviors.*
