Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences in education and sports activities expectations of Korean and Chinese parents according to the environmental characteristics of student-athletes. A total of 560 parents of student athletes were sampled from middle & high schools located in Korea and China. As a results, first, There are differences in academic expectations according to the characteristics of parents. Chinese parents had higher academic and sports expectations than Korean parents. High-income Chinese parents have higher expectations for school athletic performance, school sports activities, and sports club activities than low-income Korean parents. Second, Korean parents most expect their children of student athletes to become national athletes, while Chinese parents most expect their children to become general sports leaders after entering a sports department. Third, both Korea and China have higher athletic expectations for male athletes than female athletes, and higher expectations for children who play individual and interpersonal events rather than team events.
