Abstract
Pott puffy tumor is a rare but serious complication of frontal sinusitis. It is essentially a development of frontal osteomyelitis with high risk for intracranial involvement, resulting in serious and potentially life-threatening consequences. Its key presenting feature is forehead swelling, often accompanied by systemic symptoms, following a history of frontal sinusitis. Consideration of this diagnosis in a differential list followed by indicated diagnostic imaging can support timely identification and necessary antibiotic treatment. Prompt identification and treatment of this time-sensitive and mostly preventable condition has significant prognostic value.
•Pott puffy tumor (PPT) is a rare, serious, and preventable complication of frontal sinusitis.•PPT is osteomyelitis of the frontal bone and development of a subperiosteal abscess.•It is usually found in the pediatric population with a history of improperly treated sinusitis.•This condition is a risk for significant morbidity and mortality, like intracranial involvement.•Early recognition of PPT can prompt the needed management to reduce the risk for complications.
