Abstract
Inhalant dependence and withdrawal represent significant public health problems in teenagers and young adults, but little research has been done to characterize inhalant withdrawal or its treatment. The authors report a case of a 26-year-old male with a triple diagnosis of severe inhalant dependence, mood disorder, and human immunodeficiency virus. The present case displays clear signs and symptoms of inhalant withdrawal syndrome that responded well to treatment. This case report highlights the importance of recognizing the presence of inhalant withdrawal within the context of a clinically complex triple diagnosis. Recognition and treatment of inhalant withdrawal is especially important, because this syndrome may be ignored, as it is not listed in the current psychiatric classification systems.
