Review of "Mastery Motivation: Origins, Conceptualizations, and Applications" (see record 1996-97609-000). The history of mastery motivation is described through current definitions emphasizing the role of environmental influences and qualitative individual differences in the development of mastery motivation. The reviewer states that it is an excellent reference guide for both the student and professor; this text is a valuable addition to the growing literature on mastery motivation as a developmental construct. The contributions of leading researchers in the field are expertly organized into a coherent, easily read volume summarizing current and past research on mastery motivation and examining this research within the context of extant developmental conceptualizations and theory. The definitive strength of this volume lies in its integration of diverse and sometimes conflicting research into a logical conceptual framework of mastery motivation.
