Whether or not they are reductive in spirit, all one-level theories incur a significant argumentative debt in denying that our conscious experiences must be experiences of which we are aware: all must provide some account of the source of our apparent knowledge of our own mental states, if this is not the product of a special form of awareness of them that is built into the very structure of consciousness.\n IV.
