Abstract
Pruritus is the most common symptom in dermatology. A complex interplay of various factors influences pruritus processing, which occurs in different sites in the periphery, spinal cord, and supraspinal sites. On the basis of our recent improved understanding of these mechanisms, several types of pruritus were defined. A number of selective treatments have been recently developed. The progress in our understanding of the underlying mechanisms will eventually lead to development of more selective treatments for this bothersome symptom.
