Abstract
The timeline of the project is from June 2017 to May of 2020. The project deals with the use of a decision support tool to view economic impact analyses and risk assessments from hurricane storm surge and sea level rise coastal flooding impacts in Collier County located in Southwestern Florida. The focus area is Collier county, the Rookery Bay region, and Naples Florida, where storm surge and sea level rise coastal flooding impact hazard maps with associated economic loss estimations are needed to establish a better understanding of storm surge and sea level rise coastal flooding impacts during an event and the economic impacts post event. The goal of this internship is to develop a successful decision support online web-based tool that will help to derive estimates of financial damages from Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazards Assessment in United States (GIS) geographical information systems program (FEMA HAZUS) economic outputs from coastal flooding simulation outputs. The use of the Irma storm surge and sea level rise projection data layers from National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Vladimir A. Paramygin helped to develop a useful depth grid in the data analysis. The digital elevation model from NOAA and the depth grids input into FEMA HAZUS generates a digital elevation model, which helps to delineate the coastal flood plain. The boundary and raster polygons of the coastal flood plain in FEMA HAZUS contain the Irma, 110-year, 500-year flood return periods, and the Current, 2030, 2060, and 2100 Sea level rise projection economic output results. The economic output results are needed in regenerating and updating of more accurate hazard economic output maps needed in environmental planning, development plans, and hazard communication.
