Abstract
The goal of this project was to provide Dolphin Life with a more engaging, informative, and easily accessible land-based learning space that would allow guests of all ages to interact with marine mammal conservation concepts without having to go into the water. In order to expand teaching possibilities beyond in-water programs, the organization wanted to raise guest awareness of dolphin safety, responsible wildlife behavior, and the principles of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). Developing a prototype for an open-concept interactive back-area learning environment was the main goal of the project in order to address this demand.
The plan was implemented after conversations with staff, evaluation of guest flow, and a review of research on guest engagement, conservation communication, and environmental education. Research repeatedly reveals that hands-on exhibits, clear interpretive signage, and multisensory learning boost guest retention and promote pro-conservation behavior. This evidence informed the creation of a design that combined tactile, visual, and informative features.
The project was carried out in phases. First, background research looked at similar facilities, educational design concepts, and priorities for marine mammal conservation. To establish objectives, audience needs, spatial issues, and key messaging, Dolphin Life staff were consulted. Conceptual layouts, sample signage, an interpretive theme framework, and interactive learning station mock-ups were created using this information. Editing and feedback helped to improve these resources. A comprehensive design board and written documentation describing layout concepts, samples of signage, and suggested interactive features made up the final delivery.
Dolphin Life could use the project's finished prototype package as a foundation for long-term planning and future construction. By offering a scalable and visually pleasing instructional idea, the design complemented the organization's objective to improve the lives of dolphins and whales in both human care and the wild. The importance of guest testing, the need of finding long-lasting exterior materials, and the possibility of adding digital components like QR codes or other interactive features were all crucial insights for future development. All things considered, the project laid a solid basis for a meaningful, land-based conservation learning area that improves guest satisfaction and helps Dolphin Life's broader educational goals.
