Abstract
The Inclusive Metadata & Conscious Editing Resources, compiled by the Sunshine State Digital Network Metadata Working Group in 2020, is a practical resource guide for metadata creators, catalogers, and archivists seeking to identify and address bias and exclusion in descriptive practices. It brings together scholarship on the social and ethical implications of classification and description, case studies of reparative and conscious-editing projects, examples of digital collections using inclusive description, specialized controlled vocabularies and best-practice guides, and additional reading lists. Topics include racial and ethnic representation, gender and LGBTQ+ terminology, Indigenous materials, disability, multilingual metadata, problematic legacy description, and alternatives or supplements to traditional Library of Congress terminology. Rather than prescribing a single approach, the document is intended as a starting point for developing more inclusive, culturally responsive, and anti-oppressive metadata practices.
