Abstract

participatory science instructional design seagrass online learning Curriculum Development Environmental Education Environmental Monitoring
Participatory science has proven to be an effective method for increasing the capacity of data collection and analysis for ongoing scientific research across a range of fields, as well as providing an educational experience for participants. ‘Eyes on Seagrass’ is a participatory science program that utilizes volunteers to collect data regarding Florida’s seagrass populations to address local environmental concerns. Seagrass habitats across the world are declining at an alarming rate due to poor water quality, nutrient loading, macroalgae growth, and propeller scarring. Because humans depend on the ecosystem services provided by seagrass, it is important to monitor and protect these habitats before restoration is needed. As ‘Eyes on Seagrass’ grows, new tools are required to assist with the increased interest in participation and expanding the program. Creating a virtual training course and corresponding curriculum lowers the barrier to entry for participants, reduces resources required for training, streamlines evaluation processes, and assists with program expansion. The curriculum, course, and instructional materials were developed using learning theories relevant to the purpose of the course, such as the Experiential Learning Theory (ELT), Behaviorism Learning Theory (BLT), and Media Learning Theory (MLT). Following a standard Curriculum Development procedure, the curriculum was structured similarly to in-person training events, and existing program documents provided the content. To implement the curriculum, the course was created on Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), and the Instructional Design process was started but has not been completed yet. Once instructional materials are finalized, the course will be published for beta-testing by participants in Charlotte County ahead of this summer’s sampling season.
