Abstract
NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) is constantly looking for ways to improve their science communication strategy; they strive to make complex scientific information engaging and accessible for nontechnical audiences. Much of AOML’s research projects occur off-site and are extremely inaccessible, making it challenging for scientists to generate excitement among listeners without an intermediary to bridge this disconnect. The AOML communications team has turned to new technology and social media platforms to act as boundary spanners to reach their nontechnical audiences; these tools allow for the translation of complex science into engaging content that resonates with the public. Through immersive virtual reality research experiences and engaging social media campaigns, AOML is transforming the way scientific information is shared, making once-inaccessible research accessible to all. By facilitating engagement with scientific information, AOML hopes to bridge the existing gap between research and the public. Increased awareness of AOML’s research and findings has the potential to foster better community preparedness for weather events, more support for pro-environmental policies, and a stronger collective effort towards environmental conservation. Through these enhanced communication strategies, AOML aspires to create a more informed public with a deeper appreciation for their natural world, and the research done to protect it.
