Abstract
Plastic pollution is having a detrimental effect on the health and sustainability of today’s marine environment. To help bring awareness and educate the general public about the impacts of plastic pollution, non-profit environmental organizations are speaking locally, nationally and globally about this issue. Plastic Oceans Foundation Canada (POFC) became a Canada Revenue Agency certified charity in February 2018 to help further spread awareness of plastic pollution across Canada through many different avenues. An extensive amount of time has gone into making POFC a main contributor to helping change Canada’s perceptions of plastic pollution, but further work must be completed to expand POFC’s reach across Canada. To help with achieving the expansion of the organization, this project will be based on two intertwined objectives, the Plastic Initiatives Database and the Run Against Plastic. The first objective, the Plastic Initiatives Database will be achieved through creation of a database, which will serve as the primary source for the general public, governments, businesses and other organization to learn about plastic fighting actions that are taking place across the country. The second objective,Run Against Plastic will rely on the connections created through the Plastic Initiatives Database, using them to help form partnerships that will aid in organizing events across Canada. The work completed for Run Against Plastics consist of finding organizations to partner with POFC events that will take place across Canada. The completions of this database and creation of a partnership between Plastic Oceans Foundation Canada and other organizations serves to create a singular area where the public can become informed about the issues of plastic pollution and to show how an individual can contribute locally to aid in the combat against the growing scourge of plastic waste.
