Abstract
Speed Restriction Zones (SRZs) are designated areas within the ocean where vessels must adhere to a slower speed requirement. Recently implemented SRZs have been introduced to create additional protections for the North Atlantic right whale, and now the recently discovered Rice’s Whale. Since 2008, such zones have predominantly been utilized along the U.S. East Coast in an effort to reduce vessel strikes against cetaceans and conserve their populations. In this project, we intended to identify opinions regarding SRZs as they pertain to large whale populations. To identify and understand these opinions, we produced informative, unbiased surveys to various communities. These surveys collected demographic information as well as the individual's collective opinions regarding SRZs and ocean and marine mammal conservation. The goal was to receive as many submissions as possible, reaching no less than 30. Additionally, based on data gathered on the views and opinions of the current and proposed SRZs, we can propose recommendations and/or best practices that both protect the whales as well as the associated communities and industries.
