Abstract
Since its inception in 1961, the South Florida Science Museum has focused on natural science and history. In 2013, the museum reopened as The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium with a fully renovated aquarium. The aquarium hosts several exhibits including fish of the Atlantic, Everglades, alligators, and native and non-native freshwater fishes. Through these exhibits, The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium challenges and educates potential future scientists.
This internship provided a deeper understanding of the fundamental methods and procedures necessary to maintain aquariums and exhibits in public science centers. This internship provided extensive experience with the various aspects of animal husbandry, including biological and chemical components, needed to maintain the collections, giving a multi-disciplinary overview of the operations and maintenance of this unique facility. In addition, it provided insight into educational and outreach aspects of the aquarium for both children and adults while highlighting how current programs must continuously improve.
