Abstract
This report was supported by the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science and the National Marine Mammal Foundation (NMMF). An education outreach protfolio was created in the form of videos. These videos covered the topics of bioacoustics, marine mammal cognition, and enrichmen, with the participation of the bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions of the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program (MMP). This project prioritized the underrepresentation of BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color) individuals in STEM through the creation of a portfolio that featured and promoted diversity and inclusivity in the field. The targeted groups were from varying age ranges from school aged children to adults, and these six science communication videos accounted for the discrepancies of accessibilities across various demographics. This project tied together prior educational theories and research that were shown to be effective forms of science communication strategies. Utilizing information collected from various age groups and socioeconomic backgrounds. Early exposure to STEM was highlighted throughout this project by providing representation which helps chape career aspirations, as mentioned in page 6. Additionally, this project emphasizes the importance of the acknolwedgement and discussion of systemic barriers that BIPOC individuals endure in STEM. This indcludes sterotypes that society and institutions have created as discussed in detail on pages 7 and 8. This project was constructed through interviews with diverse groups of people in the marine biology field while connecting the audience with social issues that occur in all of STEM. The aim of this project is to provide inspiration to the next generation of scienctists in the BIPOC community and aid with the creation of more diversity in the scientific community.
