Abstract
The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration’s Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) is developing its communications team, prioritizing efforts and updates to the website, overall content, and social media. After creating a Social Media Coordinator position, the team recognized a need for a social media strategy. This project used a literature review and comparative meetings with other government social media coordinators to develop a social media strategy for SEFSC to use going forward. The literature review provided contextual information on social media’s use in the government and the strategies that have been used. The comparison meetings helped the strategy to be accurate and efficient. From both these efforts, SEFSC’s strategy was developed with updated methods for using their social media channels and provided a compilation of resources for future team members. This new social media strategy document resides on SEFSC’s internal site for reference. This strategy was made to align with NOAA’s guidelines and SEFSC’s goals to garner support from SEFSC staff towards better and more efficient social media use in the future.
