Abstract
Coral reef habitats are vital in supporting biodiversity, coastal protection, economic services, cultural significance. The corals that form the foundation of these ecosystems are in peril and researchers continue to develop new methods for restoring and conserving reefs. A recent focus of reef restoration has been the research on enhancing the recruitment of coral larvae onto
depleted reefs. One such approach is the use of larval cues or attractants to enhance settlement. This study assesses the success of exposing Montastraea cavernosa and Obicella franksii larvae to healthy reef sounds combined with treating settlement structures with crustose coralline algae (CCA) as settlement cues. The results show a high rate of settlement for the substrate treatment, but varied results for the sound treatment. The initial results of this study suggest the need for increased research on this topic but imply that healthy reef sounds could provide positive outcomes for future restoration outcomes.
