Abstract
The University of Miami, situated in hurricane-prone South Florida, faces unique challenges due to the risks associated with hurricanes and their impacts. Many students, unfamiliar with these hazards, may not fully understand the potential dangers in their new environment. Research indicates that individuals' past experiences with natural disasters significantly influence their risk perceptions, which is crucial for effective preparedness. To address these challenges, the University enhanced its existing relocation plan for the University Village (UV) dorms on the Coral Gables campus. At the request of the Director of Residential Life, Conduct, Care, and Administration, I collaborated on reviewing and refining HRL’s current plans and developed a relocation plan for University Village students for shelter-in-place scenarios. Additionally, it was recognized that understanding the thoughts and feelings of HRL students and staff during hurricanes and other natural disasters would be invaluable for the Office of Emergency Management to enhance campus preparedness By doing so, the project bolstered the safety and preparedness of University Village students while gathering valuable insights from the Housing and Residential Life community as they navigate the challenges posed by hurricanes and other emergencies.
