I was an intern with the Coral Reef Futures Lab from January to December 2024 and carried out a communications and media project. My role was to manage overall media and communications for the lab, managing social media accounts of the lab, act as photographer and videographer to document developing research and lab events, website management, and outreach coordinator. This was an interdisciplinary project composed of many different facets. The development of the project considered coral ecology, coral symbionts, journalism, video design, photo design, filmmaking, scientific writing, scientific communication, and social media data metrics. It was found that time spent on increasing production quality of video and images created as
educational social media content was successful in maximizing growing social media audience by optimizing audience growth weekly, resulting in the highest weekly followers in the lab’s social media history aside from the mass coral bleaching event of 2023.
- Utilizing media and video science communication to scale-up education and accessibility of novel coral restoration intervention techniques.
