Dr. Cai's research bridges human neuroscience with machine learning. His lab uses techniques of brain imaging (fMRI), deep learning, computational modeling, cognitive tasks and eye tracking to answer the following questions:

  1. Can we decode spontaneous thoughts from brain activity and understand rumination?
  2. How do people make decision making and learn from experiences, especially in novel tasks?
  3. How does the brain build an internal model of the environment?
  4. What principles allow a neural networks to learn the cognitive capabilities that infants acquire with similar constraints faced by the brain?
  5. How do infants and young children shift their attention during natural behavior (through collaboration)?
