Repertoire selection practices of band directors as a function of teaching experience, training, instructional level, and degree of success

The purpose of this study was to compare the repertoire selection practices of, successful and less successful band directors. Additionally, the study examined how, repertoire selection practices interact as a result of band director experience, training, instructional level, and degree of success. Two hundred twelve band directors from twenty-nine states responded to two researcher-designed surveys, the Band Director Questionnaire (BDQ and the Repertoire Selection Questionnaire (RSQ. Results indicated that there were significant differences in the repertoire selection practices of successful and less successful band directors. The underlying structure of band director repertoire selection influences is (a) musical quality, (b) outside elements, (c) appeal, (d) cost effectiveness, (e) ensemble, and (f) educational content. In addition, results indicate that repertoire selection practices of band directors are significantly different as a function of years of teaching experience, instructional level, training, and success.
