The collapse of the Weimar Republic: Political economy and crisis
Published 1986-01-01
Except for the correction of errors in the first edition, the text in the second edition is unchanged. An introduction to the second edition provides an overview of recent literature in the field and examines the Deutsche Fuhrerbriefe, a newsletter for Weimar industrialists and political figures. Begins by asking three questions: How did Germany's divided economic elites attempt to articulate a national agenda around which they could unite? How and from whom was popular support won? How did the institutionalization of social peace first work and then fail? Explores the factors that from 1925 to 1930 generated cooperation between the export oriented and liberal industrialists, on one hand, and leaders of organized labor, on the other. Demonstrates how the Weimar system worked, and whom it benefited, compromised, and hurt. Describes how the Weimar System came about and ended, the conflicts in the agricultural and industrial sectors as well as between them, and the emergence of a labor/capital conflict.
