Asset price volatility, price markups, and macroeconomic fluctuations
Published 2017-10
Journal of monetary economics, 90, 84 - 98
•Growth model proposed to analyze stock market volatility.•Model generates two-thirds of the observed volatility in the financial variables.•Most of the volatility of financial variables in our model comes from price markups.•Accounting measures of profitability are weakly correlated with stock values.•Price markup measures are highly correlated with stock values. A variant of the neoclassical growth model is considered to study the role of innovation, lags in technology adoption, total factor productivity TFP, and price markups as main determinants of asset price volatility. The model confers a prominent role to price markups as opposed to other macroeconomic sources of uncertainty. In the data, price markups are highly correlated with stock market values, whereas other financial measures of profitability exhibit much less volatility and are weakly correlated with stock market values.

NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF NONOPTIMAL DYNAMIC EQUILIBRIUM MODELS
Published 2014-02
International economic review (Philadelphia), 55, 1, 83 - 110
In this article, we propose a recursive equilibrium algorithm for the numerical simulation of nonoptimal dynamic economies. This algorithm builds upon a convergent operator over an expanded set of state variables. The fixed point of this operator defines the set of all Markovian equilibria. We study approximation properties of the operator. We also apply our recursive equilibrium algorithm to various models with heterogeneous agents, incomplete financial markets, endogenous and exogenous borrowing constraints, taxes, and money.

Investment rates and the aggregate production function
Published 2013-10
European economic review, 63, 150 - 169
In this paper we consider a simple version of the neoclassical growth model, and carry out an empirical analysis of the main determinants of aggregate investment across countries. The neoclassical growth model predicts that aggregate investment may be influenced by income growth, the capital income share, the relative price of capital, taxes, and other market distortions. We check these investment patterns for both OECD and non-OECD countries. We also decompose investment data into equipment and structures, and explore major factors affecting their relative prices. These empirical exercises shed light into the shape of the neoclassical production function. •Capital income share is not an important determinant of investment.•Taxes matter for OECD, non-pecuniary frictions for non-OECD: pitfalls of pooling regressions.•Great variability in investment equipment/structures and in their relative prices.•But no link between those relative investments and their relative prices.•Cobb–Douglas assumption for production with two aggregate capitals and labor.

Differentiability of the value function in continuous-time economic models
Published 2012-10-01
Journal of mathematical analysis and applications, 394, 1, 305 - 323
In this paper we provide some sufficient conditions for the differentiability of the value function in a class of infinite-horizon continuous-time models of convex optimization arising in economics. We dispense with the assumption of interior optimal paths. This assumption is quite unnatural in constrained optimization, and is usually hard to check in applications. The differentiability of the value function is used to prove Bellman’s equation as well as the existence and continuity of the optimal feedback policy. We also establish the uniqueness of the vector of dual variables. These results become useful for the characterization and computation of optimal solutions.
